Abstract: Great Airship Wave :
A tremendous collection of sightings, stretching from the East to the West coast of the U.S., occurred in 1896 and 1897. Many newspapers carried sightings of “airships” seen travelling via the air. These mechanical contraptions typically shone spotlights on the bottom and made numerous clanking and different noises as they moved by way of the sky. Hypothesis concerning the “airships” targeted on a collection of “inventors” who have been testing these new craft and would quickly be making them commercially obtainable for the public. Some individuals claimed that the airships landed and that they met these “inventors.” Some airship pilots claimed to be from Mars; others insisted they have been “from a place where it never rains.” Yet others claimed the airships have been being inbuilt fairly mundane workshops on the East coast. Some witnesses protested that the airships have been dropping ballast or cargo on them. (H.G. Wells wrote a brief story about this time, Grasp of the Air , a few man named Robert L’Conqueror, who conquers the world by way of his secret lighter-than-air airship know-how and numerous weapons.) Not surprisingly, shortly after the airship “wave,” the primary terrestrial zeppelins and dirigibles started being constructed and used commercially, as if the UFO was all the time one step forward of our personal know-how. There can be some repeat airship encounters through the so-called “Christmas Wave” of 1909-10, when airships with ‘searchlights’ have been seen over New England.

Probably the most curious episodes of the whole Airship wave – which, like most of the others, was considered a newspaper hoax – was a story of an airship which crashed into Decide Proctor’s windmill in Aurora, Illinois. A body of a small “martian” was stated to be recovered and buried with a number of the wreckage. In 1972, rumors have been sparked anew as a man appeared and claimed to know the whereabouts of this wreckage. This man, a Frank Kelley of Corpus Christi, stated he was a treasure hunter, and produced a number of pieces of metallic found together with his metallic detector, which turned out to be principally aluminum. No physique was ever found by UFO investigators, and, like so many other weirdos in the UFO world, this man with a pretend tackle and telephone number disappeared as abruptly as he turned up. Not unsurprisingly, in late 1972 the U.S. was already experiencing the beginnings of the huge UFO wave of ’73, which shattered post-Condon report complacency.
